Although the Gyrocopter has been around for over 80 years, they are for many a “new” form of aviation. For this reason, I feel the need to give you a little background information.
A gyrocopter can fly like both a fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter. It can maintain straight and level flight between 30 - 120 mph. It can also descend vertically, and in the right wind conditions can hover. A gyrocopter cannot be stalled, is incredibly versatile and can land in many different ways. They can fit in the circuit pattern of fixed-wing aircraft and land with the same profile as an aeroplane (low angle of descent on final approach); this makes it clear to other aviators where we are in the circuit.
The gyrocopter is highly manoeuvrable, enabling it to fly slow, tight circuits very much like a helicopter and without leaving the airfield. Local residents wouldn’t even know that we are there if needs be. Gyrocopters are capable of cruising at 120 mph, thus ensuring a wider, faster circuit is also possible. If the circuit is busy, we can utilise the gyrocopter's versatility to fit in with other traffic. On landing, the gyrocopter can roll no more than 10 meters in a crosswind, with zero roll in a headwind. This enables the Gyrocopter to land very accurately, thus enabling it to exit the runway within seconds. Students are taught to pre-rotate on the runway. This can take 30 seconds before the take-off roll. However, we can do immediate departure take-offs if the circuit is busy.
I follow the most up-to-date teaching methods as prescribed by the top instructor-training school in the country, Gyrocopter Experience. I am proud to be an associate of the International Association of Professional Gyroplane Training that focuses on good airmanship, safety and awareness of other airfield users.
My teaching methodology and operating procedures are much the same as any PPL course. I teach upper air work exercises until a student is ready to learn take-offs and landings. When flying circuits I usually keep to a maximum of five in any one session. For many students this is the optimum number.
I have full instructor insurance and public liability insurance.
Students are taught to fly at circuit height all the way to the threshold of the runway before descending vertically, and they are taught a typical fixed wing circuit, and to know which method is appropriate for each situation.
